High-Speed Railway Passage Takes Shape 89 Meters Beneath Yangtze Riverbed

Deep beneath the Yangtze River, a high-speed railway crossing is taking shape. "Linghang", the world's largest-diameter shield tunneling machine for high-speed railway construction independently developed by China, recently passed beneath the waters of the Yangtze River, completing the shield-driven tunnel section under the river for the Chongming-Taicang Yangtze River Tunnel.
The massive shield tunneling machine, measuring 148 meters in length and weighing about 4,000 tons, has undertaken the crucial tunneling work beneath the Yangtze River. The river-crossing passage it has excavated is an important part of a key project on the Shanghai-Nanjing section of the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway.
